Preparing Students for Success

The Student Organization Mentoring Partnership (SOMP) is a college transition program for incoming freshmen, providing community and a firm foundation that promotes retention and success throughout the first year and beyond. Through partnerships with student organizations, SOMP extends the reach of the Leadership and Mentoring Program (LMP).

They are both built on organizational practices and science that have been adapted for various contexts, including small group movement, fast-track leadership programs and affinity groups.

Current student organization partners include the Alabama Finance Association, Alabama Leadership Association, Association of Latino Professionals For America, Black Business Student Association, and the Culverhouse Real Estate Society.

Boost professional skills and development of members while increasing their meaningful engagement with the organization.

Early and substantial engagement with incoming freshmen who are potential members.

Participant Development

Mentees get support with the college transition while developing academic and career competencies around professionalism, communication, and career/self-development.

Mentors develop career competencies such as leadership, critical thinking, and teamwork within a program whose value can readily be understood by potential employers.

Sessions promote study skills, time management, stress management and general academic and professional growth, with exposure to related campus resources and alumni.

Office of Culture and Success Partnering

Student organizations can partner in multiple ways, tailored to fit and support organization goals and capacity.

Provide overall structure, coordination and guidance based on success and lessons learned with the Leadership and Mentoring Program.

Supply key materials or templates for mentor and mentee interactions.

Support in managing processes including reporting system for mentoring interactions and tracking of mentor service hours for resumes and for scholarships, employment or graduate school purposes.

Provide access to various events and activities within the Office Culture and Success, including the Professional Development Conference.
